A handheld steam cleaner does a lot with nothing but tap water and heat. It is not the right tool for every surface, though, and knowing the difference saves a warped floor or a streaky window.

What the steam is doing
Steam on its own does not scrub. What it does is soften: grease melts, soap scum loosens and dried-on dirt lets go of the surface underneath. The brush, the squeegee or a cloth then lifts it away. That is why the accessories matter as much as the steam, and why a quick wipe straight after each pass is part of the job.
Where it earns its place
- Tile grout, in bathrooms and behind the hob, with the small round brush.
- Glazed tiles and shower screens, followed straight away by the squeegee.
- Hob surrounds, extractor fronts and oven doors, once they are cold.
- Sealed stone and ceramic floors, working a small patch at a time.
- Window glass and frames, if the glass is not cold to the touch.
- Car mats and fabric seats, as a spot treatment, blotted dry afterwards.
Where to stop
Heat and moisture together can damage some materials. Leave these to a damp cloth:
- Unsealed or waxed wood, cork, and the joints of laminate flooring, which can swell
- Delicate fabrics such as silk and velvet, and untreated leather
- Painted walls and wallpaper, where steam can lift the finish
- Sockets, switches and anything electrical
- Very cold glass, which can crack if hot steam hits it suddenly
If you are not sure, try a hidden corner first and let it dry before judging the result.

Keeping the cleaner in good shape
Scale is what slowly ruins a steam cleaner. In a hard-water area, use filtered or distilled water, empty the tank after each session rather than leaving water standing in it, and descale it as the manual describes. A cleaner that has started to spit or lose pressure is usually telling you it needs descaling.
Steam burns. Never point the nozzle at people, pets or sockets. Before refilling, switch off, let the unit cool and release the pressure fully, exactly as the manual says.
